How to buy a TV

First step is to choose a size and then set a budget. Bigger is not always better when it comes to purchasing a TV. Your viewing distance is going to determine your TV frame size. Viewing distance is determined by how far you will be sitting from the TV while you are normally watching it. Measure or approximate the distance, we do not need to get the rulers out for this.

If you own a credenza, the TV should not extend past this furniture piece!

Viewing distance:

  • 3-5 feet or less:

    • Size: Choose something small 32" or less for this.

    • Budget:

      • >$500: Samsung Frame offers a great option if you want your TV to look like artwork while it is turned off. Otherwise move to the next budget tier.

      • <$200: See what is on sale at your preferred retailer. All options are OK at this size and price.

  • 4-6 feet:

    • Size: 32" - 42" frame size

    • Budget:

      • >$500: Samsung Frame offers a great option if you want your TV to look like artwork while it is turned off. Otherwise move to the next budget tier.

      • <$300: See what is on sale at your preferred retailer. All options are OK at this size and price.

  • 6-7 feet:

    • Size: 55" or smaller

      • You might want to get that 75" TV that Costco has when you first walk in the door but this is not the situation for that. Too big is a problem when it comes to TVs.

    • Budget:

      • >$1000: Samsung Frame offers a great option if you want your TV to look like artwork while it is turned off. Otherwise move to the next budget tier.

      • $500-$1000: QLED, UQ, 8K, 4K, OLED, UHD, Crystal. These are mostly marketing terms unless you are a tech guru. You want to buy a QLED TV that has the correct supports to fit your space. Most have 2 stands on the edges of the TV but a few manufacturers offer a center stand to support the TV. If you are mounting on the wall then most wall mounts will offer adapters to fit your TV.

      • $300-$500: Choose a TV that says 4K. Other than that it comes down to preference of how the outside frame of the TV looks to you. Ignore the marketing like edge lit, smart tv, dimming, voice assist.

      • <$300: See what is on sale at your preferred retailer. All options are OK at this size and price.

  • 7-9 Feet:

    • Size 55" - 65"

    • Budget:

      • >$1500: Samsung Frame offers a great option if you want your TV to look like artwork while it is turned off. Otherwise move to the next budget tier.

      • $1000-$1500: Look for QLED. Outside of that it is preference on how the TV itself looks.

      • $500-$1000: If you can get a QLED on sale grab it. Otherwise we are looking for 4K and preference of how the TV itself looks.

      • <$500: See what is on sale at your preferred retailer. Looking for 4K as the best option.

  • 9-14 feet:

    • Size 75"+:

    • Budget:

      • >$2000: Samsung Frame offers a great option if you want your TV to look like artwork while it is turned off. Otherwise move to the next budget tier.

      • $1000-$2000: Look for QLED. Outside of that it is preference on how the TV itself looks.

      • <$1000: If you can get a QLED on sale grab it. Otherwise we are looking for 4K and preference of how the TV itself looks.
